The 11th Wexford Artists’ Book Exhibition: Call for Submissions

After an 8 year absence from the scene -The 11th Wexford Artists’ Book Exhibition returns in November 2013. The show will take place at the Denis Collins Gallery, on the Quays, Wexford.

The new exhibition will feature “Contemporary Artist’s Books made by Irish makers over the last decade. The work will be available to be handled. The books follow no theme from a curatorial point of view and the submission is open- so there is no selection. However the works will all have been made in the last decade.Most of the books will have a strong Irish connection- e.g. made by people who are Irish/ or were or have been living in Ireland.

Info For Participants:

  • Deadline for sending in is Wednesday 6th November
  • Send works to:  Andi McGarry, The moorings, Kilmore quay
  • Show opens on 13 November runs till the 23 November 2013
  • There will be no entry fee for participants- (each participant will make their own arrangements for / return postage/ insurance.)

Artists can send images of their work for inclusion in the publicity /poster / by uploading them to Facebook page or via post please label title and date and medium etc. also that you give permission for us to use the images.

We are hoping to tour this exhibition – let us know that we have permission to also tour your book when you register.

Shibori – details of workshop

Introduction to Shibori with Margaret Walsh 20 April ~ 10.30am to 4.30pm

Shibori is a Japanese resist-technique on fabric in which a pattern is securely tied into the fabric using various methods of folding, twisting, pleating, wrapping, clamping or compressing. The fabric is then dyed, resulting in unique patterns being created on it. Participants will be taught the basics of Shibori. They will be guided through a variety of resist techniques on fabric: folding, pleating, wrapping, gathering, clamping, etc. They will then dye the fabric, achieving unique patterns. Each participant will dye eight or nine samples approximately nine inches square.

Paper Paste Workshop

The first of our Spring Workshops took place yesterday in our studio on John St. in Dingle. The art of bookbinding included the practice of embellishing the books with decorative end papers called paste papers. Paste papers have been used in bookbinding for 400 years. History of Paste Paper

Participants proclaimed that it was a wonderfully creative process and great fun!

Next weeks workshop is An Introduction to Shibori with Margaret Walsh. Participants will be taught the basics of Shibori. They will be guided through a variety of resist techniques on fabric: folding, pleating, wrapping, gathering, clamping, etc. They will then dye the fabric, achieving unique patterns. 11th Wexford Artist’s Book Exhibition Back for 2013After an 8 year absence from the scene -The 11th Wexford Artists’ Book Exhibition- one of the most user friendly and Artist friendly annuals will return in November 2013. The inaugural show will take place at the Denis Collins Gallery, on the Quays, Wexford.

The Previous Wexford shows ran for 10 consecutive years from 1995 -2005, and were very successful.
The New exhibition will feature “Contemporary Artist’s Books made by Irish makers over the last decade. “There will also be a small invited selection of International makers in the exhibition. Most of the work will be for sale. What makes this show unique is that all the books are made by contemporary makers will be available to be handled. The Books follow no theme from a curatorial point of view and the submission is open- so there is no selection.

The only criteria are that the works will all have been made in the past decade. Also the books will have a strong Irish connection- e.g. Made by people who are Irish/ or were or have been living in Ireland. The books will go on show in the Denis Collins Gallery in November for two weeks and will then tour to other venues.

Spring Workshops at Meitheal Eitseála

We are offering a series of four spring workshops at our studio on John Street, Dingle. Each of the workshops is a benefit for Meitheal Eitseála, with all fees, minus a small materials charge, going to the print studio to help with our costs. Meitheal Eitseála offers great gratitude to the instructors who give so generously of their time and talent, and hope you will join us for these exciting events.

Three of the workshops are €60 each, one €40, but as an added incentive, all four are being offered for €200. And of course, full members of Meitheal Eitseála/West Kerry Fine Art Print Studio will receive a 5% discount.

Paste Paper with John and Caroll Pratt 13 April ~ 10.30am to 4.30pm

Decorate paper for your artwork. Paste-painted paper originated several hundred years ago in Europe and was used in bookbinding. Today it is wonderful for other purposes, as well. We will provide the acrylic-colored paste, the materials and supplies. You bring your enthusiasm, ready to learn a new skill. The large sheets of paper can be used in bookbinding, as substrate for a number of graphic design purposes, and in collage. And it’s great fun to do. Finger-painting for Adults.

A Simple Fold-Up Album with John and Carol Pratt 11 May ~ 10.00 am to 1.00pm

A five-leaf book that can be quickly learned and completed by anyone with basic hand skills. Uses for this little book are limited only by your imagination. It can be a card or gift, a small photo album, a display for art prints, or simply an “interesting” what- not. No sewing required, and most materials will be provided. This one will be addictive.

Six Hours, Eight Books with Sandra Landers 18 May ~ 10am to 5pm

A day with untraditional books. The workshop will cover different forms of nonglue bindings, exploring the many ways in which books can be made and the many formats in which a narrative can be told. At the end of the day, each participant will leave with eight plain model books and, perhaps, a new knowledge of what a book can be.
