Meitheal Eitseála started out as a group of artists who came together to learn the art of etching under the masterful eye of Niall Naessens. We have since organised many exhibitions, workshops, artists talks and open studio events in the print studio we opened in Dingle. We are no longer a formal group since this central workshop had to close but we still touch base with each other from time to time to discuss projects and problems. This exhibition is the result of one of those discussions. We wanted to show what we’ve been working on and, with a few other artists, who also work in fine art printmaking in West Kerry, to show the wide variety of techniques and expression used by printmakers. We hope you enjoy the show.

Thosnaigh Meitheal Eitseála amach mar ghrúpa ealaíontóirí a tháinig le chéile chun ceárd na heitseála a fhoghlaim fé shúil mháistriúil Niall Naessens. Ó shin i leith tá cuid mhór taispeántaisí, ceardlann, cainteanna ealaíontóra agus imeachtaí stiúdió oscailte eagraithe againn sa stiúdió priontála a d’osclaíomar sa Daingean. Nílimid le chéile mar ghrúpa foirméalta a thuilleadh ó bhí ar an stiúdió úd dúnadh, ach bímid fós i dteagmháil lena chéile go mion minic chun tionscnaimh agus fadhbanna a phlé. Eascraíonn an taispeántas seo as ceann dos na babhtaí teagmhála sin. Bhí fonn orainn taispeáint go bhfuilimid ag obair linn agus, i dteannta roinnt ealaíontóirí eile a oibríonn i réimse an phriontáil ealaíne i gCorca Dhuibhne, cuid dos na teicnící agus módhanna léirithe iomadúla a úsáidteann lucht déanta priontaí a chur ós comhair bhur súile. Tá súil againn go mbainfidh sibh súp as an seó.

The first of our Spring Workshops took place yesterday in our studio on John St. in Dingle. The art of bookbinding included the practice of embellishing the books with decorative end papers called paste papers. Paste papers have been used in bookbinding for 400 years. History of Paste Paper

Participants proclaimed that it was a wonderfully creative process and great fun!

Next weeks workshop is An Introduction to Shibori with Margaret Walsh. Participants will be taught the basics of Shibori. They will be guided through a variety of resist techniques on fabric: folding, pleating, wrapping, gathering, clamping, etc. They will then dye the fabric, achieving unique patterns. You can still sign up, call or email 0861502432 or walsh.margaret1@gmail.com

Spring Workshops at Meitheal Eitseála

We are offering a series of four spring workshops at our studio on John Street, Dingle. Each of the workshops is a benefit for Meitheal Eitseála, with all fees, minus a small materials charge, going to the print studio to help with our costs. Meitheal Eitseála offers great gratitude to the instructors who give so generously of their time and talent, and hope you will join us for these exciting events.

Three of the workshops are €60 each, one €40, but as an added incentive, all four are being offered for €200. And of course, full members of Meitheal Eitseála/West Kerry Fine Art Print Studio will receive a 5% discount.

Paste Paper with John and Caroll Pratt 13 April ~ 10.30am to 4.30pm

Decorate paper for your artwork. Paste-painted paper originated several hundred years ago in Europe and was used in bookbinding. Today it is wonderful for other purposes, as well. We will provide the acrylic-colored paste, the materials and supplies. You bring your enthusiasm, ready to learn a new skill. The large sheets of paper can be used in bookbinding, as substrate for a number of graphic design purposes, and in collage. And it’s great fun to do. Finger-painting for Adults.

Introduction to Shibori with Margaret Walsh 20 April ~ 10.30am to 4.30pm

Shibori is a Japanese resist-technique on fabric in which a pattern is securely tied into the fabric using various methods of folding, twisting, pleating, wrapping, clamping or compressing. The fabric is then dyed, resulting in unique patterns being created on it. Participants will be taught the basics of Shibori. They will be guided through a variety of resist techniques on fabric: folding, pleating, wrapping, gathering, clamping, etc. They will then dye the fabric, achieving unique patterns. Each participant will dye eight or nine samples approximately nine inches square.

Six Hours, Eight Books with Sandra Landers 18 May ~ 10am to 5pm

A day with untraditional books. The workshop will cover different forms of nonglue bindings, exploring the many ways in which books can be made and the many formats in which a narrative can be told. At the end of the day, each participant will leave with eight plain model books and, perhaps, a new knowledge of what a book can be.
